It was a political smorgasbord in the House this week. President Trump pushed the SAVE Act through by attaching it to a broader package of bills. The legislation would make it more difficult for eligible Americans to vote. It now moves to the Senate, where its prospects remain uncertain. In the meantime, Trump continues other efforts to reshape how American elections are conducted, which will impact our democracy. 

Trump has been injecting uncertainty into the nation's election system. Across the country, election deniers are abusing voter-challenge procedures, using unsupported claims of widespread voter fraud to contest the eligibility of registered voters. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, more than 100,000 voter challenges were filed during the 2024 election cycle. The result is an enormous burden on local election officials, who are already stretched thin in their responsibility to administer secure and accessible elections.

At the same time, the administration has taken unprecedented and dangerous steps to expand federal influence over election administration. Earlier this month, President Trump removed the remaining leaders of the bipartisan U.S. Election Assistance Commission, an independent agency Congress created to help states administer elections, including certifying voting equipment. The dismissals followed a Supreme Court decision that gave the president broader authority over certain independent agencies.

The RNC has also attempted to tamper with elections. It wants to deploy poll watchers and election observers in at least 17 states as part of its strategy for the 2026 midterm elections. The RNC chair acknowledged that the effort aims to help Republicans maintain control of Congress.

Meanwhile, the administration has intensified pressure on state and local election officials. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin warned that officials who refuse to comply with federal requests for voter data could face fines or even jail time. Intimidating election officials risks compromising their duty to conduct free and fair elections.

As his support continues to erode, Trump has begun attacking the very system that gave him the House and Senate in 2024. He will consolidate his power any way he can, even if that means tampering with elections and voting — the bedrock of our country.
