Raul Ruiz is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing California's 25th Congressional District. Born and raised in the Coachella Valley, Ruiz worked as an emergency medicine physician before entering politics. He earned multiple degrees from Harvard University and returned to Inland to practice medicine and improve healthcare access for underserved populations. In 2012, he defeated an incumbent member of Congress and became the first Latino to represent the Coachella Valley in Congress. Since taking office in 2013, he has focused on healthcare, veterans' issues, economic opportunity, environmental protection, and public health.
