Rep. Lauren Underwood is a Democratic politician and registered nurse serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois. Before Congress, she worked in the Obama administration at the Department of Health and Human Services, helping implement the Affordable Care Act and respond to public health emergencies. She was elected to Congress in 2018, flipping a historically Republican district and becoming the youngest Black woman ever elected to Congress at the time. Since then, she has focused heavily on healthcare policy, maternal health disparities, and strengthening public health systems.
