JAC Statement on Overturning of Roe v Wade

This is a dark and tragic day in America for all women and their families. Overturning Roe will impact every aspect of women’s lives, regardless of their economic standing and where they live. Women have fought for generations for the freedom to have autonomy over their lives. Today, six justice just erased that progress.

 

This decision also strikes at the heart of our liberties and freedom. If the Court can reverse a settled right, then every other right is at risk.

 

There is no surprise in today’s SCOTUS decision. We saw it coming when Trump promised to appoint anti-choice judges to the courts — and he did. We saw it coming when state after state passed punitive, restrictive abortion laws.

 

Today, we must turn our anger into action. If we can elect a few more Democratic Senators, we can eliminate the filibuster and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act. This is our only hope. Congress can make sure with this Act that there is a federal law, that states cannot override, guaranteeing a woman’s right to a safe and legal abortion.
