JAC Statement on the Passing of Rep. John Lewis

In Memory of Rep. John Lewis (D-GA)

Joint Action Committee for Political Affairs mourns the passing of Rep. John Lewis. He touched the heart and soul of our country with his passion and work to  improve the lives of his fellow Americans.

He will always be remembered for his dedication to fighting racial and religious injustice. During these dark times, Rep. Lewis was a voice for reason, trying to soothe the tensions plaguing our country.

Rep. Lewis was a friend to the Jewish community as well. He understood the importance of strengthening that relationship.

A highlight of JAC's annual trip to Washington was seeing Rep. Lewis. He always made time for us to visit with him in his office. After a discussion that always ran longer than planned, he proudly showed us his memorabilia and photos.

As Rep. Lewis said, "When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have to speak up. You have to say something; you have to do something."

Through his work in the civil rights movement and Congress, he lived his life by those words. He always stood up for what he believed in and urged others to do the same.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
