Week In Review 8-14-2020

We felt hope on Wednesday afternoon seeing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris together and listening to their vision for America. We can emerge from this dark period and begin the healing and rebuilding that our nation desperately craves. 
 
With Joe and Kamala in the White House, the future is full of possibilities for everyone. As Joe said, "That's what sets this nation apart, is that everyone [has] the ability to go as far and dream as big as hard work and their God-given ability will take them."
 

Week in review 8-7-2020

As the nation celebrated and memorialized Rep. John Lewis' life this week, nearly every eulogy and commentary mentioned the Voting Rights Act. The House on Monday voted to rename H.R. 4, the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019, to the John Lewis Voting Right Act. No other American is as closely associated with the fight to protect voting rights than Lewis.

Week in Review 7-25-2020

We are in a for frightening next 100 days leading up to the election.
 
As Covid continues to plague the country, voting in person may be too dangerous. The  GOP is resisting efforts to expand vote by mail and early voting. States are struggling to update and secure their voting infrastructure. There appears to be continued foreign meddling in our elections.

In Memory of Rep. John Lewis (D-GA)
 
Joint Action Committee for Political Affairs mourns the passing of Rep. John Lewis. He touched the heart and soul of our country with his passion and work to  improve the lives of his fellow Americans. 
 
He will always be remembered for his dedication to fighting racial and religious injustice. During these dark times, Rep. Lewis was a voice for reason, trying to soothe the tensions plaguing our country.
 

Week in Review 7-10-2020

We can never rest when it comes to protecting women's reproductive rights.
 
Last week we breathed a sigh of relief when the Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana law requiring doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. This law would have left the state with only ONE abortion clinic. 
 

Week In Review 6-26-2020

Our country reached a milestone this week, but we won't be celebrating. The Senate confirmed President Trump's 200th judge. He has already filled nearly 30 percent of federal appeals court seats. Just one of Trump's 53 confirmed appeals court judges is Hispanic and none are Black. His lack of commitment to diversity is consistent with his overall values.
 

Week In Review 6-19-2020

This week the nation's highest court handed down two critical rulings that will impact millions of peoples lives. They did their job, absence of politics.
 
Earlier in the week, the Supreme Court ruled that LGTBQ people cannot be discriminated in the workplace. Yesterday, the Court blocked Trump's attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). This was an Obama-era program that protects hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation.
 

Week In Review 6-12-2020

 
All eyes were on Georgia's primary election last Tuesday. The Peach State was seen as a barometer of what we can expect in terms of voting this November. Georgia had purchased new voting machines and mailed out ballots to voters. However the election was a mess and Georgia lived up to its reputation for voter suppression.
