WHAT'S ON OUR MIND

PARTIES, CONVERSATION AND MUSIC
JANUARY 10, 2025

Last week, JAC had the honor and privilege of attending the swearing-in ceremonies in Washington, DC, for many of the candidates we supported. The atmosphere in the Congressional hallways was filled with joy as people gathered to congratulate the newly elected Members. Even the multiple roll call votes for the new House Speaker couldn’t dampen the spirits.

Our candidates deeply appreciate JAC’s support and recognize the vital role that JAC—and each of you—played in their victories. These Members of Congress are committed to protecting our rights, and it is critical that we continue to engage with them to support their efforts.

Mark your calendars for JAC’s annual Policy Conference in Washington, DC, taking place Tuesday, March 4th, through Thursday, March 6th. This event offers extended opportunities to discuss key issues with Representatives and Senators. Let’s continue forging ahead, making our voices heard. Be a part of this important moment. Click here for details.

Our candidates fully grasp the magnitude of the challenges ahead in the 119th Congress. Sen. Elissa Slotkin (MI) highlighted this in her remarks, saying, “We will constantly struggle with when to compromise. On areas of democracy and our rights, we do not compromise.” She emphasized the importance of focusing on strategic, irreversible issues, adding, “Those issues we commit to, and we go deep.”

JAC was invited to celebrate Sen. Slotkin’s swearing-in alongside her family, friends, and colleagues at the Spy Museum—a fitting venue for someone who previously served in the CIA. Her former boss at the Pentagon, Chuck Hagel, spoke at the event, praising Slotkin’s character, courage, and judgment. “She defines who we are as Americans and will always put her country first,” he said. It is for these reasons that JAC members chose Slotkin as our Person of the Year.

Some of the most moving moments of the week came from seeing young Members with their families. Rep. Mike Levin (CA), accompanied by his young children, reminded us why we all sacrifice and fight to protect our democracy. “I get goosebumps every time I go to the Capitol because of the difference I can make in people’s lives,” he shared.

The day ended on a high note with a performance by several Members of Congress who showcased their musical talents. Reps. Tom Suozzi (NY), Jared Huffman (CA), Morgan McGarvey (KY), and former Rep. Dan Kildee (MI) played together in their House band, along with former Sen. Debbie Stabenow (MI) and Sen. Tim Kaine (VA), leaving the audience energized. They closed with Bob Seger’s timeless lyrics: “We are young and old, and we are running against the wind.”

But together, we will persevere, and we will succeed. JAC matters.
