What's On Our Mind 2-11-2022

This week, JAC was privileged to have one of the nation’s premier political analysts, Charlie Cook, founder of The Cook Political Report, join us for an in-depth discussion on the 2022 midterm elections.

While most of us felt that the 2020 election was “the” election of a lifetime, Charlie said that every election is important. However, 2022 is more important than most elections because the consequences of a change in power in the Senate or House are monumental.

The fight is not over.

Amnesty International (AI), an organization that feigns commitment to protecting all human rights around the world, used its international platform to once again delegitimize Israel and spread bias against Israel throughout the world.

Their report this week, the 208th report on Israel since the 1970s, unevenly criticized Israel for human rights violations while failing to condemn Hamas and other terror groups.

What's On Our Mind ...

Across our nation and the world, there were memorials and tributes for the victims of the Holocaust yesterday to honor International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the anniversary of the Soviet liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945.

Tomorrow is the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. This year’s commemoration will be a solemn occasion, as the fate of that life-changing decision hangs in the balance. The solidly anti-choice majority on the SCOTUS will most likely strike down Roe, dealing a consequential blow to women for generations to come.

One year after the insurrection at the Capitol we know that the attack on our democracy is not over.

Armed extremism is on the rise across the country, fueled by hate and the leaders of the far-right. The GOP continues to spread lies about the 2020 election. They are already planting dangerous seeds of doubt about the integrity of the 2022 election. Some of those that supported and participated in the violence of January 6th are now running for Congress. If elected, they will undoubtedly bring with them that same destructive animus.

What's On Our Mind ...

The House took an important step on Thursday to strengthen our democracy with the passage of the Protecting Our Democracy Act.

This act is a historic package of pro-democracy reforms to create new and strengthen existing guardrails to prevent the abuse of executive power, restore Congress as a meaningful check on executive authority, and reinvigorate Congress’s exercise of its own constitutional power.

The passage of President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill, which had bipartisan support, does give our country something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, during an extremely challenging time. As he said, it was” a monumental step forward as a nation.” In another historic achievement, the House passed the President's Build Back Better Act early this morning and it now moves onto the Senate.

On Tuesday we marked the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht. It was a turning point in the autocratic takeover of Germany by the Nazis. No longer did the Third Reich engage in antisemitic rhetoric. Now it was condoning and fomenting violence. That horrific night set in motion the mass extermination of Jewish communities across Europe.
