Why Your Support

Nancy Pelosi is the Democratic Leader of the US House of Representatives.  In the 110th and 111th Congress, she was chosen by her colleagues to be the Speaker of the House, the first woman to hold that position and the highest ranking female elected official in the country.  Pelosi is the first woman, the first Californian and first Italian-American to lead a major party in Congress. She is a great friend to JAC and aligns with us on all of our issues.  Pelosi, who has made frequent trips to Israel, has a perfect voting record on matters pertaining to the US-Israel relationship. Pelosi reaffirms that “America and Israel share an unbreakable bond: in peace and war; and in prosperity and in hardship." The founding member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Pelosi is pro-choice and a proponent of  Planned Parenthood, stem cell research, and access to contraception. She has a 100% NARAL rating. She was instrumental in the passage of  the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, DADT, and the Dream Act in the House. Pelosi is practiced in the fine art of politicking both in her community and in the halls of Congress. We value her friendship and dedication to our shared values. Now more than ever, we need her wise and effective  leadership,

Background

The 8th congressional District of California consists of four-fifths of the city of San Francisco. Its residents are well educated and voter registration is overwhelmingly Democratic. The area includes Chinatown, Telegraph Hill, North Beach, Castro with a large gay community, and the infamous Haight Ashbury. San Francisco has the lowest percentage of children of any major city. Even with its large Asian community, San Francisco, known for its racial tolerance, is one of California's whitest cities.

About The Candidate

Nancy D'Alesandro Pelosi grew up in Baltimore, the youngest of six Italian-American children, from a family with a strong tradition of public service. Her father and brother both served as the Mayor of Baltimore. After moving to San Francisco, Pelosi worked her way up in Democratic politics. In 2008 Pelosi met with Israeli Knesset speaker Dalia Itzik and was presented with the replica dog tags of the three Israeli soldiers that were captured by Hezbollah and Hamas in 2006. She has stated that she keeps them as a “symbol of the sacrifices made, sacrifices far too great by the people of the state of Israel.” Pelosi's ties to the Jewish community are a little more personal.  Although she is Catholic, two of her six grandchildren are Jewish.
