Why Your Support

As a Florida State Senator, Ted Deutch earned national recognition for passing legislation making Florida the first state in the U.S. to exert economic pressure on Iran to thwart its nuclear weapons ambitions. The language of his law was later incorporated into federal legislation as part of the Iran Sanctions Act of 2010. Within his first month in Congress, his expertise on divestment and the identification of companies supporting Iran’s energy sector was solicited in testimony before the Homeland Security Committee. His interest in national security matters and the Middle East is inseparable from his lifelong pro-Israel activism, so it is not surprising that he is a leading voice on Israel, Iran, and the Middle East.

Deutch is an advocate for women’s issues. He believes that ensuring equal rights for women both in this country and abroad is essential to the continued development of our nation and to the well-being of people throughout the world. He believes that women's reproductive lives must be kept free from governmental intrusion.

Ted Deutch is an active participant in the Jewish community and a strong proponent of its values in the U.S. Congress.  He is a great friend to JAC.

Background

Rep. Deutch was elected to succeed Robert Wexler when Rep. Wexler left Congress to take the helm of the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace, a think tank. His district is wealthy, older, well educated and urban. It has a very strong Jewish community with an increasing Hispanic population.  The 19th district is heavily Democratic.

About The Candidate

Ted Deutch considers the opportunity to serve in Congress a great honor and a continuation of his lifelong commitment to bettering the community and the world. This commitment to service has earned him prominent awards, including the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship and the James and Marjorie Baer Leadership Award from the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.

Deutch's father was a World War II veteran who earned a Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge.

After graduating from High School in 1984, Deutch went on to study at the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Law School. Rep. Deutch and his wife of 19 years, Jill Deutch, moved to South Florida in 1997. They live in West Boca Raton with their 14-year old twin daughters, Gabrielle and Serena, and their 11-year old son, Cole. As one might expect from a Jewish congressman from south Florida, Rep. Deutch aligns with his progressive constiuency on many issues ranging from choice, gay rights, gun safety, women’s issues and fair pay.
