Why Your Support

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky has represented the people of the 9th district of Illinois for ten years, advocating a progressive perspective on the issues that matter most to her constituents and to JAC. From health care reform to gay rights, Congresswoman Schakowsky is known for her progressive views. She has been a resolute and vocal supporter of women’s reproductive health rights and, over her many years of service, has maintained a 100% approval rating from NARAL, as she has fought to preserve Roe v. Wade, expand access to contraceptives and women’s health services for low-income women.

Congresswoman Schakowksy has been a strong advocate and a perfect vote on the U.S.-Israel alliance, demonstrating a profound understanding of the moral and strategic nature of the relationship. She supports Israel’s right to self-defense, consistently approves of foreign assistance to Israel and has advocated for joint cooperative programs between the United States and Israel. Although political opponents have tried to portray her as weak on support for Israel, all such attempts have failed the truth test.  Her record is unassailable.

Background

Jan Schakowsky has represented the 9th district of Illinois for over a decade, championing the issues that matter most to JAC. In 2010 the Congresswoman faced what was thought to be a significant challenge from a young Tea Party candidate and Alan Dershowitz acolyte, Joel Pollak, who claimed the Congresswoman was not sufficiently pro-Israel. She won handily. With the Illinois Congressional map changing as a result of redistricting, 2012 could prove to be a more challenging electoral environment.

About The Candidate

Jan Schakowsky is a consistent progressive vote for the Democratic Party. Before being elected to the US Congress a decade ago, she served in the Illinois state assembly. The Congresswoman can be depended on to be a vocal proponent of the issues that matter most to JAC from women’s reproductive health rights, to the critical separation of church and state, to Israel and the U.S.-Israel alliance. Jan Schakowsky voted in favor of health care reform, condemned countless proposals to allow teacher-led prayer in schools, and opposed the war in Iraq from the beginning, eventually founding the Out-of-Iraq Caucus in the House of Representatives. As a young mother and consumer advocate before she was ever elected to public office, she organized a consumer movement that led to legislation requiring readable dates on food products in super markets.
